What is the Cloud?
What is the Cloud? This is the million dollar question for many! We're all used to using it and all use the term but what is it and how does it help you! Well all cloud means is you are using someone else's servers and/or software infrastructure as your own! Basically someone else procured massive computers and they let you use some of their computing power.
So instead of you purchasing and owning software or computer hardware, you can use someone elses for a monthly fee. This concept gives you an infrastructure, platform, software as a service instead of as an owned product that you pay IT specialists to maintain for you. These "as a service" options also give you more accessiblitly and flexibility because its all internet connected.
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is an instant computing infrastructure, provisioned and managed over the Internet. Quickly scale up and down with demand, and pay only for what you use.
IaaS helps you avoid the expense and complexity of buying and managing your own physical servers, and if you're big enough, other datacenter infrastructure. Each resource is offered as a separate service component, and you only need to rent a particular one for as long as you need it. The cloud computing service provider manages the infrastructure, while you purchase, install, configure, and manage your own software—operating systems, middleware, and applications.
Software as a service (SaaS)
Software as a service (SaaS) provides a complete software solution that you purchase on a pay-as-you-go basis from a cloud service provider. Basically you rent the use of an application for your organization, and your users connect to it over the Internet, usually with a web browser.
The service provider manages the hardware and software (IaaS), allowing your organization to deploy an app at minimal upfront cost quickly.
Platform as a service (PaaS)
Platform as a service (PaaS) includes infrastructure —servers, storage, and networking — but also middleware, development tools, business intelligence (BI) services, database management systems, and more. PaaS is designed to support the complete web application lifecycle: building, testing, deploying, managing, and updating.
This allows you to avoid the expense and complexity of buying and managing software licenses, the underlying application infrastructure and middleware or the development tools and other resources.
